Advancement Via Individual Determination, AVID, is a course that prepares students in the academic middle for admission to a four-year college or university.
The core component of the AVID Program is the AVID elective, which supports students as they challenge themselves in more rigorous classes. We currently offer eight sections of AVID for 9th-12th grade.
Students in AVID are taught:
- Study skills
- Organizational skills
- Note-taking strategies
- Time management
- Writing and research skills
The class also includes tutoring sessions twice a week led by college students from APU, Citrus, and Cal Poly Pomona. These tutors provide support for success in the academically rigorous curriculum.
Students in AVID are immersed in a college-going culture. They receive information about colleges and universities through:
- Field trips
- Guest speakers
- College tutors
They also learn about scholarship opportunities.
Every student in the AVID class is on track to attend a 4-year college or University.
