Board of Education Updates Vision and Mission Statements
At the meeting, the Board of Education adopted new Mission and Vision statements that reflect our deep commitment to educational excellence and student growth. HIGHLIGHTS
Covina High Aquatics Center Groundbreaking Ceremony
Join us in celebrating the Covina High School Aquatics Center groundbreaking at 4:00 PM on February 26th, at Covina High School. This milestone event marks the beginning of an exciting project to replace the vintage 1950s-era pool with state-of-the-art aquatics facilities.
Through this project, we reinforce our commitment to equipping our students with safe and modern facilities that reflect our devotion to education and athletic achievement.
The Aquatics Center project is funded by Measure CC and the generous support of Congresswoman Grace Napolitano who will speak at the event.

Sue L. Maulucci expressed her gratitude to Sophia for leading the Pledge of Allegiance salute. She also appreciated the opportunity to tour Sierra Vista Middle School and was impressed by the school's outstanding programs and the nurturing atmosphere for students.

Maria M. Caceres extended warm congratulations to all school counselors during National School Counselors Week, commending their dedication to fostering social and emotional learning. She emphasized the critical role counselors play in creating supportive environments for student’s well-being and academic success.

Simon Wright shared insights from his tour of the Western States Carpenters Union Training Center, expressing gratitude for the valuable lessons learned through trainee testimonials. He highlighted the importance of our Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and emphasized supporting the whole student, whether they are pursuing a university education or entering the labor force.

Featuring grand performances from Northview, South Hills, and Covina High Schools and their feeder tracks, the festival celebrates our students' talents, our exceptional music programs, and our commitment to arts education. Sylar Segovia from Grovecenter Elementary School and Megan Arellano from Las Palmas Middle School led the Pledge of Allegiance and shared insights from their experiences at their respective schools.

Early Retirement Incentive
The Board approved a 1% base salary, off-schedule, one-time payment to employees who submit their retirement notification in writing to the Personnel Services department. To qualify for this incentive, a written retirement notice must be sent to Personnel Services in writing (email is okay) by 4:00 pm on February 16, 2024. The retirement date must be effective on or before June 30, 2024.

The Board discussed updates to Board Bylaw 9150. Our current Student Board Members brought these suggested updates using their experiences to make these positions more meaningful.
Key suggested updates include:

Student Board Members may serve two one-year terms.

Student Board Members may earn elective course credit.

Student Board Members must engage in civic conversations by meeting with city, county, and state officials yearly.

Student Board Members will be selected each year in March to facilitate a smooth transition to office.
Maria E. Cruz expressed joy over the festive end-of-semester activities at school sites, highlighting Cypress Elementary's hot chocolate celebration and Ben Lomond's principal as Elf on the Shelf. She also noted the successful and enjoyable Colt Christmas event.

Simon Wright congratulated the Fairvalley Adult Transition Program graduates and thanked Principal Rebecca Handzel and student MC Kenneth Spiegel for a memorable ceremony. He also acknowledged the South Hills High School cheer team's first-place victory at the USA Spirit Competition Tournament. He thanked the parents and coaches for their impactful dedication to the students.

California Dashboard Releases New Public Data

Dr. Stephanie Kearns, the Director of Equity, Assessment, and Program Evaluation, delivered an insightful presentation on the 2023-24 California Dashboard results. The California Dashboard is crucial in the state's educational accountability framework, offering comprehensive data on key performance indicators, including graduation and suspension rates, standardized test scores, the advancement of English learners, college and career readiness, chronic absenteeism, and other metrics. Notably, the Covina-Valley District has shown commendable progress. We are now only eligible for General Assistance, a testament to its significant improvements, and have moved beyond the need for Differentiated Assistance. This shift underscores the District's successful strategies in enhancing educational outcomes.

The School Accountability Report Card (SARC), required yearly by the state of California, is an essential resource for parents to understand the quality of their children's schools. This report showcases the remarkable accomplishments of our schools in critical areas such as teaching staff qualifications, facilities and maintenance, and instructional materials for students. The District remains committed to upholding a high standard of education, supported by a team of highly skilled professionals, evidence-based educational programs, and school-wide initiatives designed to engage and enrich the student experience.
2023-24 Single Plan for Student Achievement

The Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) is a comprehensive document outlining the school's strategic actions and budget allocations to enhance student outcomes and overall performance. This plan aligns with the District's Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), which sets forth overarching goals for the entire District. Emphasizing our commitment to excellence, the District persistently ensures the provision of high-quality education through a highly trained staff team while maintaining healthy and conducive learning environments for all students.
Revised Job Description for Credential Technician

The Board approved a revised job description for the Credential Technician position, which has vital impacts on enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of credentialing processes. These revisions include updated qualifications and experience requirements, clarify roles and responsibilities, and ensure assistance for teachers with credential renewal processes. These changes are anticipated to bolster the Personnel department's operations, contributing to recruiting highly qualified staff dedicated to educating our students.

Revised Job Description for Instructional Aide-Early Childhood

The Board approved an updated job description for the Instructional Aide-Early Childhood position, significantly enhancing our early childhood education programs. These revisions highlight key responsibilities, including assisting site supervisors and classroom teachers and caring for the holistic instruction of the child rather than just relying on formal teaching methods. Instructional Aides will work primarily in the District's infant, preschool special education, and Transitional Kindergarten (TK) programs. These changes are expected to strengthen the foundation of early childhood education in our District, ensuring a nurturing and supportive learning environment for our youngest learners.

District Selects Financial Advisor
The Board approved a contract with Keygent, LLC to provide financial advisory services to the District, including evaluating bond markets, potential debt issuance for pension obligation bonds or other resources, debt management, maintaining credit ratings, long-term strategic planning, and managing bond issuance. This is part of the Distict's long-term plan for fiscal stability and to maximize resources.
