Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA)

  • What is a SELPA?

SELPA stands for “Special Education Local Plan Area”.  The SELPA is responsible for supporting member districts in the implementation of the legal requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA), the federal law for Special Education.

There are approximately 120 regions or SELPAs in California.  While the most common SELPA size is about 5,000 special education students, the East San Gabriel Valley SELPA is a multi-district SELPA, with just over 12,000 students.  Ten school districts, as well as several charter schools in the eastern end of Los Angeles County, are represented in the East San Gabriel Valley SELPA.

Covina-Valley Unified School District is an active member of the East San Gabriel Valley SELPA. For more information please visit East San Gabriel Valley SELPA
