Health Services

What is Physical Health

  • A key component of overall well-being contributes to a person's ability to carry out daily tasks, maintain energy levels, and live a fulfilling, active life. 
  • Refers to the overall condition of the body and how well it functions.
  • Involves maintaining the body’s systems and organs in good working order

Factors That Can Impact Our Physical Health

  • Poor Diet / Hunger, Lack of Exercise
  • Chronic and Acute Illnesses
  • Sleep Deprivation and Irregular Sleep Schedule
  • Poor Hygiene
  • Stress, Anxiety and other mental health disorders
  • Communicable Diseases, Access to Healthcare
  • Smoking, Alcohol, and Drug Use

Health Services and Direct Care

  • Provide first aid and emergency care for injuries and sudden illnesses that occur during school hours.
  • Manage chronic and acute conditions by creating health care plans and monitoring students' health status.
  • Administer medications to students and perform specialized health procedures following California state regulations and school district policies.
  • Conduct routine health screenings, such as vision, hearing, and oral health checks, and refer students for follow-up care when necessary.

Health Assessments and Health Condition Management

  • Develop Health Care Plans for students with chronic conditions at the discretion of the school nurse (RN) (e.g., asthma, diabetes, seizures).
  • Train and supervise school staff on managing specific health needs
  • Serve as a team member in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 Plans for students with special health needs, and being a part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Advocate for appropriate accommodations related to health in the educational environment.
  • Provide health education to students, staff, and parents

Mandated Health Screenings

Vision and Hearing

  • Who is screened?

    • TK/K, 2nd grade, 5th grade, and 8th grade students

    • Students’ being assessed for, or currently enrolled in special education services

    • Referral from classroom teacher

Oral Health

  • Who is screened?

    • TK/K grade students and students entering in a public school for the first time

    •  C-VUSD strives to provide free dental screenings for students throughout the school year. Please stay tuned for updates and communications regarding upcoming free dental screenings at school.
