Community School Intiatives
Covina Valley Unified School District is committed to fostering equitable and thriving learning environments through the implementation of the community schools model. This approach transforms schools into community hubs that address inequities and mitigate the effects of poverty by establishing collaborative partnerships that value students, staff, families, and the wider community. In 2023, seven Covina Valley USD schools were designated as community school hubs: Covina High School, Northview High School, South Hills High School, Ben Lomond Elementary, Cypress Elementary, Merwin Elementary, and Workman Elementary. Through an unprecedented partnership with Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) and community-based organizations, including the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, and the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, this initiative has positively impacted over 6,000 students and their families within the district. Covina Valley USD is a leader in strengthening school communities to cultivate a more equitable and socially just system, empowering all students, families, and staff to succeed. The community schools initiative directly aligns with Covina Valley USD's mission to be a nationally recognized, innovative school district committed to providing the programs, skills, and knowledge that meet the needs of the whole child in a safe, healthy learning environment, ensuring that every student can confidently and effectively communicate reasoning, collaborate, demonstrate critical thinking, and creatively problem-solve to thrive in college, career, and life.
