Mr. Casey Stratton

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year at Covina!

Last June, we celebrated the Class of 2018 in our 119th Commencement Ceremony - 324 graduates were awarded diplomas and entered our world as global citizens. Graduation is always one of our favorite events of the year. It symbolizes accomplishment, perseverance, and the culmination of our work as educators. At graduation, our valedictorian spoke of the familial environment that characterizes our school. Our senior class president challenged seniors to find the good in all situations and to stand up for what we believe in. And our ASB president spoke of memories, friendships and the next chapter in the graduates’ lives. That evening, as well as every day, our students inspired the entire staff at Covina High School!

Due to the partnership of students, families and staff, Covina High School thrived during the 2017-2018 school year. ASB boasted historic ticket sales to both Homecoming and Prom, our annual Color Rally exceeded all expectations, and our Marching Band was awarded their 11th Bands of America Regional Championship. Drum Line, Jazz Band, Color Guard and Choir all had wonderful years and our Theater Program put on three awe-inspiring productions. Interact Club continued their partnership with Rotary to provide countless hours of service during Operation Santa Clothes and our Robotics students were Botball Champions. Athletically, we were Valle Vista League Champions, State Tournament Qualifiers, CIF Finalists, CIF Champions and CIF Southern Section Record Holders.

I am excited to announce two new roles and one new member of our leadership team at Covina High School. Erin Lippert is now Dean of Students and brings experience from counseling at the middle and high school level to best support the academic achievement of our students. Wendy Travis will be our Head Counselor – an essential member of our counseling team for many years, she brings innovation to individual counseling and parent outreach. Finally, Winlor Chang joins our team as a new Counselor. With an extensive background in the college admissions process, Mr. Chang brings over eleven years of counseling experience to our team.

As a result of Measure CC, Covina High School continues to undergo modernization projects across campus. Last year we completed projects on the quad, farm and main office. We continue with modernization this summer with improvements to several classrooms to support visual arts, digital journalism, leadership, and students with special needs. The Agriculture Program will open a remodeled classroom that invites innovation and collaboration. Our Project Lead the Way Engineering Program will have two state-of-the-art classrooms connected by a maker space. We’re also making improvements to our theater by expanding the footprint to allow for additional seating. We sincerely thank our community for supporting our students!

Academically, our established programs continue to thrive. 93% of graduating seniors in our AVID program plan to enroll in a college. Project Lead the Way will add its capstone course, Engineering Design and Development, in the fall. Enrollment in our Technology Program - Exploring Computer Science, AP Computer Science Principles, GenYes and IT Essentials - continues to grow. Our Agriculture students are recognized as top performers in the state of California. The partnership between our Theater and Music Program brought home a Herman Award for Best Orchestra in our production of A Chorus Line. And our S.H.O.E. Program, with pathways in Nursing and Sports Medicine, allow students to intern at local hospitals and clinics. Finally, our ‘A-G completion rate,’ an indicator of college and career readiness, was close to 70% last year, the highest percentage in Covina High School’s history.

I am happy to communicate many positive initiatives and accomplishments here at Covina High School. At the same time, I am aware that we have room to grow in a variety of capacities and look forward to working with our many constituents to identify and address those in the months and years ahead.
