Mr. Casey Stratton

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Covina High School!

Just over a month ago, we celebrated the Class of 2019 in our 120th Commencement Ceremony. Graduation is always one of our favorite events of the year as it symbolizes accomplishment, perseverance, and the culmination of our work as educators. The Class of 2019 was an exceptional group of individuals who represented our school so incredibly well with a 100% graduation rate and a 75% A-G course completion rate. In the fall, our students will enroll at Baylor University, U.C. Berkeley, U.C. Irvine, U.C.L.A., Cal State Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona and other top colleges and universities across the country. At graduation, our valedictorians spoke of the familial environment that characterizes our school, as well as the memories and friendships from the last four years. That evening, as well as every day, our students inspired the entire staff at Covina High School!

Due to the partnership of students, families, and staff, Covina High School thrived during the 2019-2020 school year. Our Agriculture Program guided eight remarkable students to State FFA (Future Farmers of America) Degrees – an accomplishment bestowed on less than 2% of all FFA students across the country. Our Engineering Program graduated its first cohort of students who completed our four-year pathway. Students from our S.H.O.E. and ASL programs completed articulations with Mt. Sac in medical terminology and advanced sign language. Our Marching Band received high honors at the Bands of America Regional Championship and Drum Line, Jazz Band, Color Guard, and Choir all had wonderful years. Our Theater Program put on two awe-inspiring productions, including Cinderella at the Covina Center for the Performing Arts. Interact Club continued their partnership with Rotary to provide countless hours of service and our local PTSA Chapter was recognized as an ‘Outstanding Unit.’ Athletically, we were Valle Vista League Champions, Covina High School Record Holders and CIF qualifiers.

Academically, our established programs continue to thrive. 93% of graduating seniors in our AVID program plan to enroll in a college or university. Our Technology Program continues to expand with increased enrollment in AP Computer Science Principles, IT Essentials, Exploring Computer Science and GenYes. This year, we will add a course in drone technology that will offer FAA certification to meet growing workplace demands. And instruction in our core classrooms continues to be rigorous as evidenced by our most recent SBAC testing results. Our 11th graders accomplished proficiency levels of 69% in ELA and 32% in Math, exceeding both district and state averages.

As a result of Measure CC, Covina High School continues to undergo modernization projects across campus. Last summer, we completed projects in several classrooms to support visual arts, digital journalism, leadership, and students with special needs. The Agriculture Program opened a remodeled classroom that invites innovation and collaboration. Our Project Lead the Way Engineering Program opened two state-of-the-art classrooms connected by a maker space. We also completed improvements to our black box theater by expanding the footprint to allow for additional seating. Looking to the future, we hope to break ground on an Aquatics Center and improve our athletics facility. We sincerely thank our community for supporting our students!

I am happy to communicate many positive initiatives and accomplishments here at Covina High School. At the same time, I am aware that we have room to grow and look forward to working with our many constituents to identify and address those in the months and years ahead. To accomplish this, we encourage our families and community members to take active roles in our PTSA, School Site Council, English Language Advisory Committee and Booster Clubs.
